Chile stretches along the South American coast from the tropics almost to the Antarctic. Few countries in the world boast snow-capped volcanoes, icy fjords, waterless deserts, lakes, deep canyons, beaches and green headlands all together.
At 756,950 km², Chile is the world's 38th-largest country. It is comparable in size to Zambia, and is about twice the size of Japan.
Chile’s capital is Santiago and is located in the middle of the country. It is also the country’s cultural, educational and financial centre.
There are four seasons in most of the country: summer (December to February), autumn (March to May), winter (June to August), and spring (September to November).
The Atacama Desert is more than 20 million years old and is 50 times more arid than California’s Death Valley.
Located 3,700 km off the west coast of Chile, Easter Island is the world’s most isolated inhabited island. The island’s native name, Rapa Nui, is Polynesian. Isolated for centuries, the people of Rapa Nui developed their own distinctive culture, a culture perhaps best known by the huge figures carved of volcanic rock.
