Ernest Shackleton Quick Facts

  • HMS ENDURANCE’S motto is ‘Fortitudine Vincimus’ - 'By Endurance We Conquer'. This motto originates from that of the great Antarctic explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton who made history in his ship, Endurance during his Imperial Trans-Antartic Expedition in 1914-15.
  • It is said that Shackleton advertised for men on his expedition with the following advert:

    Men wanted for hazardous journey,
    Small wages, bitter cold.
    Long months of complete darkness,
    Constant danger, safe return doubtful.
Honour and recognition in case of success.
