If you are in the UK, you will no doubt have experienced that autumn is upon you; the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder. However, for those of us in the southern hemisphere that means that spring is upon us; long daylight hours will soon return to the Antarctic after 6 months of darkness and the weather will be pleasant enough for Endurance to make her way back down to the Antarctic Peninsula to carry out her vital work once more.

In my last update I told you that we were en-route to West Africa and in particular Ghana and Sierra Leone to host further climate change seminars and training with the Ghanaian and Sierra Leone Navies, just as we did in South Africa. Now that we have sailed from West Africa, it is a good opportunity to tell you about our experiences as we head to colder waters.

You may recall from my last Blog that I mentioned two important seminars that we hosted in South Africa prior to sailing; one on Climate Change and one on the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) which is the part of the sea around a nation’s coast that a country has to look after. Now is probably as good as opportunity as any to tell you all about them.

I am sad to say that Endurance’s stay in South Africa has drawn to an end. We have had a very successful 8 weeks in Simon’s Town and a great deal of important engineering work and training has taken place to ensure we are ready for our next work period off the Coast of West Africa.

It’s been some time since my last update to you all, and a lot has happened during that time. Following our visit to the Falkland Islands, we set sail for South Africa where we are now conducting our Supported Maintenance Period until August this year.

Just as the UK is preparing for summer, down here in the Antarctic we are shutting down for winter. Recently we helped the British scientists on Signy Island to secure their base for the season and get back to the UK for their holidays.

This week has been about closing down and saying goodbye. Since I last wrote, we have closed two British Antarctic Survey bases for the winter, and all of our various visitors have now finished their work and gone home. Having left the BAS base at Rothera, we headed north intending to have a relatively straightforward trip through the calm waters of the sheltered Crystal Sound and the beautiful Lemaire Channel.

I’m amazed that it’s been nearly 2 weeks since I wrote my last blog. I am sure, when you see how much we have been doing; you will understand and not be too cross with me for leaving it so long. We have hopefully kept you up to date with the tracking map and weather, and our amazing story about our Emperor penguin find. I still can’t quite believe that I actually got to see such a great bird up close on the bergs next to the ship.
