About the Project
Welcome to the 2003/2004 HMS Endurance Tracking Project.

HMS Endurance is a Royal Navy Ice Patrol Ship. She is deployed each year to Antarctica, leaving her base port of Portsmouth in the autumn, to return 7 months later in late spring.

Through the visitandlearn.co.uk website, we will track the passage of HMS Endurance and provide factfiles about various aspects of the journey - looking in particular at climates, ecosystems and wildlife at locations along the route, with additional material on the work of HMS Endurance and her close links with the British Antarctic Survey.

‘Run to the South Pole in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief’

Run Challenge
LPT Tate, LCPL Brown, LSTD Gould, LSTD Thompson and LA (SE) Baker preparing for the antarctic charity run challenge

HMS ENDURANCE’s Ship’s Company will be attempting to run the equivalent distance from Portsmouth Harbour to the South Pole, a total of 8421 miles, during the 2005 Antarctic deployment. Members of the Ship’s Company will use the ship’s running machines over the course of the 4 and a half month deployment and record the cumulative total mileage. The total distance will be the equivalent of each person on board completing over 2.5 marathons during the deployment. This event is taking place in support of Macmillan Cancer Relief. Anybody wishing to sponsor the run in support of this worthwhile cause can send a cheque made payable to ‘HMS ENDURANCE Central Fund’ to the Commanding Officer, HMS ENDURANCE, BFPO 279.
