The second of this seasons 3 work periods this is also the shortest, with the ship being out of the Falklands for a short 3 weeks. The main area of operations is the tip of the Antarctic peninsular and the small islands around. There are 3 elements to our tasking this work period, firstly as always, we are conducting surveying. This will be in the areas around Dundee Island, James Ross Island, King George Island and Deception Island. The SMBs will be disembarked on a daily basis, and recovered overnight, we will be looking at tides and depths as well as some magnetic work.
The second element of our tasking is inspection of the bases on the peninsula. There are 12 that we have been tasked to visit. A team will go ashore, look around the bases and ensure that the day to day business of living and the ongoing science is conducted in a manner in keeping with the Antarctic Treaty (see link next week). The teams that go ashore to do this vary and as such there is an opportunity for individuals in the Ships Company to get ashore to see round the foreign bases. The teams then report their findings back to Miss Rumble, the Deputy Head of the Polar Regions Unit of the Foreign Commonwealth Office. The first few visits will be to: Jubany (Argentinean), Archtowski (Polish), Ferraz (Brazilian), and Elichiribehetu (Uruguayan). In total we will visit 12.
The third part of our tasking is the disembarking and recovery of some, although not all of the BAS personnel to the various points that they are studying their various projects around the islands.(link to follow next week).
We were also fortunate to have embarked Lt Cdr Griffiths the Fleet Education Officer (FEDO) who will spend the work period advising the ships company on personal development, education opportunities, and assisting them in setting up learning programmes for themselves. He is also teaching a Spanish class for those who are interested in learning a little more than 2 beers please before we get back to South America on the way home.
All this complete we will be making tracks back to the Falklands at the end of January for a short logistics stop. But also to hold a cocktail party for local dignitaries and key personnel at MPA, and to re-embark some of the personnel who returned to the UK for this work period. It will be the last opportunity to stretch our legs for a while as the 3rd and final work period is likely to be 6 weeks out of the Falklands!
