After what was probably the tensest week of the Deployment so far ENDURANCE got a well-deserved break which called for a spot of RNR.

Ice berthed off Hallie along with Ernest Shackleton actions began to organise an Extreme Cricket Match. POC(O) Ollie Oliver, ENDURANCE Cricket Captain, was bombarded with a total of 26 names all wishing to partake in the Cricket Match. 2 teams were selected, Team B captained by Ollie and the other, Team A, to be captained by the legend that is (or is it was) Jed Stone.

After an early morning pitch inspection the surface was deemed playable despite a slight covering of snow and ice. The under pitch heating was not used on this occasion as fears grew that the pitch would become water logged and unplayable.

At 1330 the wicket was set up and both teams made their way from the pavilion to the boundary. The earlier toss which took place in the MCO with two members of the same team present, Ollie and Charge Luya (no cheating going on there then) saw Ollie’s team batting first.

The first ball bowled at 1400 by Paul Fegan, Ollie facing what is as always the pressure ball of the match; a defensive block played ensuring no golden duck on this occasion. The pairing of Ollie and Ali giving a combined total of 19, Ollie bowled by Paul Fegan and Ali retiring. Next saw the downfall of 3 wickets in one over. Clubz took to the bowling firstly taking the wicket of Bud Flanagan for the grand total of 0. A tremendous catch in the slips by Dave Fearnley sent Si Meredith back to the boundary early in his appearance and finally another wicket for Clubz as PJ failed to deal with the tricky conditions of the wicket.

Wickets were falling in rapid succession now and in wasn’t too long before the remaining men were sent back to the boundary. Team B notching up a total of 32 all out.

Team A took to the wicket, opening batsmen were the Captain, Tom Karsten and Topsey Turner. The Captain opened the batting as he meant to carry on forcing the ball over the boundary to take 4 runs. The ever increasing crowd (a number of penguins)

came to life in appreciation of a great display of batting, the Captain notching up a very respectable 14 runs, one 4, one 6 and the rest singles. The retirement of the Captain saw Topsey “If the Skippers not playing nor am I” Turner bowled on the very next ball.

Kenny Kenyon, pictured, increased Team A’s total to 18 before Jack Frost said enough is enough and decided to give Team B a fighting chance. In a bid to strike what could have proved to be a delightful 6 he took a swing, missed the ball completely and instead took his own wicket.

The team Captain Jed “The Legend” Stone was next up and in a bid to relive his younger days looked every part the professional. His wicket fell after only 2 runs much to the delight of Quaker “Its an outrage referee” Oates. Despite losing some wickets in a short space Team A went on to successfully ease past the score set by team B giving them this year’s title.

On completion of the match both teams and spectators were invited to “Stefs” Tea Room where tea and cucumber sandwiches were serve kindly prepared by Stef during the match.

TEAM A

Stone (c), Fearnley, Karsten, Kenyon, Allen, Frost, Fegan, Burke, Tate, Turner.

TEAM B

Oliver (c), Luya, Flanagan, Meredith, Williamson, Oates, Ashford, Parsonage, Benbow, Byrnes, Hayes, Winstanley.

Man of the Match: Captain Tom Karsten

The Annual HMS ENDURANCE Back to School Sports Day took place in rather cooler climates this year than have ever been remembered. Last year's event took place just days prior to crossing the equator; this year's just prior to dropping off the bottom of any map ever produced!

At –10 degrees C competitors from all departments mustered well kited out for the conditions, running spike substituted for the more sturdy “Pro Boot”

Assisted by RPO Reggie Perrin Clubz got the events underway with the ever-popular Egg and Spoon Race, CPO Iain Palmer romping home in what proved to be a heroic achievement after pulling a hamstring in the early stages.

Dads race

Events rolled on with some pretty impressive times, some just outside World Record pace.

The ever-amusing Spin Relay caused a stir among the crowd, Scott Lister getting the Warfare Dept into a commanding lead early on. The other teams battled hard to regain position and managed to pull back this early bid for success by the last leg. In a close and exciting finish to the race the Warfare managed to hold off a strong Exec team and cross the line first for 5 valuable points. The 100 metres saw a very strong line up, Jodie Gallagher, Bungy Williams, Bagsey Baker, Wez Craven and Topsey Turner all lined up, the atmosphere could have been cut with a Pussers dining hall knife! It was Wez Craven who came out on top with a surprise from Jodie Gallagher; last place. Come on the RN!

With points close the final race was all-important. Lining up in the Dads Race was the Captain, Navs, POWTR, Topsey Turner and Dave Rae. Topsey the good egg that he is admitted early on that he would run for the Engineers however was under 40 to gain 1 point. Unfortunately Navs was not as forth coming. During the award ceremony it came to Clubz attention that Navs, not yet 40, had been awarded the 5 points for the win. To this end Navs was disqualified and the 5 points awarded to the Captain running for the Exec. Justice is a beautiful thing!

A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon came to a close and into the evening BBQ where the points were announced and the new “no expense” Flight Deck Trophy awarded to the Exec Dept.
