St Ippolyts CE Primary School is located on the outskirts of the old
Hertfordshire market town of Hitchin in the village of St Ippolyts. Founded
in 1846, the school enjoys a beautiful rural location opposite the village
church with which the school maintains strong links. The school is a
combination of old and new, with the original Victorian buildings still in
place and a central part of the school site. After several years of
determined fund-raising, November 2004 saw the completion of an ambitious
building project; refurbished classrooms, a new library, new offices and a
bright, spacious school hall brought the schools accommodation firmly into
the 21st Century.
The school has 150 children aged 4-11 from the village of St Ippolyts and
the surrounding areas. As a Church of England School, their aim to provide the
best possible education for each child within the context of a caring
Christian community. The children are happy, motivated and enthusiastic
towards learning; the school are very proud of them!
Class 3 (age7-9) have been following the progress of HMS Endurance since her
departure in October 2005. The children are extremely fascinated in the ship
and her journey and it is proving to be a very exciting topic! The fact that
their teachers brother, CPO Peter Morewood is on board makes it very real
and provides a direct link. The children check the website every day for
updates, print out the position maps and mark the latest location on a world
map. Photographs, pictures and postcards adorn the classroom walls and the
children have written several letters and made Christmas cards to send to
Endurance. The class have learned about the Shackleton expeditions, and
penguins have become many childrens favourite animal!
The class are looking forward to continuing their work after Christmas,
especially when Endurance enters the ice there is a space on the classroom
wall just waiting for more photographs! Some of the children are SO enthused
by the whole project, The Royal Navy may well have some new recruits in a
few years!
