Andy Rouse – Wildlife Photographer
Hello everyone, I’m a British wildlife photographer working on board HMS ENDURANCE for this third work period in Antarctica. I’m here to complete a book project on the Antarctic region and provide valuable PR for the superb work that HMS ENDURANCE carries out.

I have been a professional wildlife photographer for 10 years. I specialise in working with either very dangerous animals or those that live in very remote areas of the planet, and my favourites include Grizzly and Polar Bears, Leopards and of course the Penguin family. I have made a few TV series for Channel 5 and Animal Planet, one of which was called ‘Wildlife Photographer’. The show featured me getting up close and personal to animals such as crocodiles, lions and elephants and sometimes I have to admit that things did not go plan and I was a little scared. I have learnt that provided you read an animal’s body language and treat it with respect then it will treat you with respect in return.

I work with my partner Tracey, who is a great wildlife photographer, a Zoologist and writes all of our books. She has been with me for the past 6 weeks (we spent Christmas in the Falkland Islands) but had to return home to Wiltshire to look after our two cocker spaniels, Muppet and Damson. If you who have spaniels you will know how much looking after they take!

Oh yes one last important fact, I am a fanatical Hammer! Yep, I support West Ham and follow their highs and lows around the world and am still rejoicing over their 3-2 win against Arsenal!

You can see my work in many different places, for example greeting cards, posters, books (we have written 15 to date and just published on Polar Bears) and in various magazines. I also have a website – www.andyrouse.co.uk. This year my image of a Gentoo Penguin surfing (taken in the Falkland Islands) won an award in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition because it brought a smile to everyone’s face.
