Im sure many RN personnel are familiar with the formalities that take place when their ship arrives alongside in a foreign port. Cocktail parties, visitors tours, open days and of course some form of social gathering that benefits the local community. However, Thursday 17th November, the 3rd day of HMS Endurances visit to Salvador saw the ships liaison team organise a childrens party onboard.
The children were able to visit the ship through the important work that Estrela does. Estrela is a British/Brazilian charity working with young people and disadvantaged communities in Brazil and in Britain. With a base in Bahia, Salvador, they work alongside seven local Brazilian groups, 2 of which joined the ship for a superb childrens party hosted by the Royal Navy. Luiza Mahin Community School and E Squared youth arts initiative, work with children in the shanty periphery areas of the city, where children suffer poverty, malnutrition, situations of violence and have few opportunities in life generally. Something that was all too apparent during our own runs ashore. Some live in shacks on stilts over re-claimed land. The groups provide family support, education and arts opportunities such as dance, music to create an alternative to the streets and child labour the common problem in their neighbourhoods.
Kicking-off with a magic show, the children were then escorted up to the bridge, where they able to sit in the Captains chair, take the ship in hand and were talked around some of the equipment. Im sure, one of the rare occasions that the skipper didnt mind giving up his seat on the bridge! Next was the opportunity to sit in one of the helicopters. Following this, Lt Abbott HM2 re-capped with the role of HMS Endurance, aided by the ships comprehensive photograph album.
E Squareds youth samba band gave a lively performance on the flight deck (if not loud!) for the crew and the children onboard, leaving us all in high spirits. Finally, visitors got to experience some of pursers finest cuisine, beef burgers, chicken nuggets and chips. Judging by the amount of leftovers, I can confirm there were no complaints.
Im sure the many of the ships company that helped with the day found the experience as much of an eye opener as the visitors themselves. Its not often the ship gets turned into a play ground for 20 odd excitable under eights!
Thanks go to all who helped and made the day possible.
