Films of HMS Endurance in Antarctica |
HMS Endurance is the Royal Navy’s Ice Patrol Ship. Her function is to support
British interests in Antarctic waters, especially around the Antarctic
Peninsula, assist the British Antarctic Survey in carrying out its scientific
research programme and carry out hydrographic surveying duties on behalf of the
United Kingdom Hydrographic Office.
HMS Endurance is 91m long and has a beam of 17.9m. Her red hull colour is for
easy recognition in the ice, most especially from the air. She is powered by
twin diesel engines and has a top speed of 15 knots. Her bow enables her to cut
through 0.9m thick ice at 3 knots and she is fitted with some of the most
sophisticated navigation and manoeuvring aids in the world.
