NBCD Its a Knockout
HMS ENDURANCE operates in probably the most hostile environment in the world. Just like any other ship, Warship, Cruise Liner or ferry the sea is an unpredictable place and must never be underestimated. This is second to every ship being an inherently dangerous place to both live and work. Fuel, oil, aircraft operations and in some cases, ammunition pose a daily threat to one and all. Every member of her Ship’s Company depends on each other for their ability to react in a swift and professional manner to whatever situation presents itself. Every Sailor, boy or girl, Captain or Able Rate has had to undergo basic and intermediate training in fighting fires in ships, controlling the ingress and spread of flood water, fire and smoke.

When ENDURANCE sails from UK waters, which she does every October she takes with her a responsibility to continue this training on a near daily basis to ensure swift and positive reactions to any ship emergency. This is achieved by a small team of NBCDQ’s led by the “Chief Stoker” An NBCDQ is a Senior Rating who has undergone the 5 week “Q’s” course (Q standing for qualified) at the Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Defence school at HMS EXCELLENT, home of the infamous “Fire-fighting School”.

This team is practised in planning, executing and umpiring this unique training to all members of the Ship’s Company. But anyone can sit in a lecture, receive a powerpoint presentation or stand in a circle whilst the basic principles are drummed home once more. There is always a need for the “hands on” approach to continuation training and this is achieved with our very own “NBCD It’s a Knockout” An event of 6 or 7 stances of all types of damage control, firefighting, sea survival and first aid. Points are awarded to teams for teamwork, correct techniques, leadership and in some cases enthusiasm! This involves using the equipment as it was intended, getting wet, fighting mock fires, damage control regarding flood water and the delicate handling of casualties for evacuation by helicopter. Not forgetting of course its second and vital function in any Royal Navy ship, the development of team spirit, camaradarie and the will to win!! The team with the most points accrued from all the stances is declared the winner and there may even be some light refreshment for all!! NBCD is everyones responsibility.
