The Endurance Kayak story so far
Due to being delayed in the Falklands at the start of our expedition for 5 days, we kayaked to Stanley in what turned out to be a very challenging mini expedition.
When we then got in the vicinity of James Ross Island and all set to go, the aerial recce indicated that although we might have a chance, the number of days remaining meant our kayaking plans were impractical. The ice concentration between Hamilton and Lockeyer Island was 10/10ths for about 10miles of the route (optimistically judged too). A quick lesson about ice concentration here: Ice concentrations are measured from 1 to 10. 10ths is an estimation of ice concentration. Therefore 5/10ths means half the sea is covered in ice and 10/10ths represents complete coverage.
While we were disappointed, a quick replan of the route was made and off round Vega Island we went.
The next 8 days were outstanding. Never the same day twice and it had everything you could expect from an Antarctic expedition. We completed 105 nautical miles, lost only one day to bad weather and ranged from Ulla point up to Cape Crystal on the Peninsula. Very successful and satisfying.
