January Training Diary

During HMS ENDURANCE’S 2006/7 deployment, four members of the Ship’s Company with 3 other Royal Navy personnel and one civilian instructor will be participating in ENDURANCE KAYAK 66 SOUTH, a unique expedition to circumnavigate James Ross Island for the first time in sea kayaks.

The ENDURANCE KAYAK team have all been working hard to make sure that they are in top shape for their attempt to circumnavigate James Ross Island in sea kayaks. Training has taken many different forms, all of which are having been extremely hard but essential to our overall preparations.

Some mornings it has been hard to drag yourself out of bed especially when you have been on watch until midnight the night before. Other times it would have been much easier to read a book or catch up on some work. But instead we have found time to get down the gym or go to circuits all with the bigger picture in mind, to be the first to circumnavigate James Ross Island in kayaks.

The motivation to go training has not always been there but the motivation to complete this unique expedition has kept us going when it has been cold outside or when we have all been tired from lack of sleep.

A Ship is not always the best place to train but we have found ways to get around the limited space and facilities on board. The Leading Physical Trainer onboard has been pivotal in our training, designing a program that was achievable and allowed us to work up to increase both our muscular and cardiovascular endurance and strength.

Here are some pictures of us training and the training program we have followed as closely as we could.
