Kick Start Health Resource Packs

The health of all our children and young people is a crucial part of the Every Child Matters Agenda. Many decisions that they make at primary age affect them for the rest of their lives and research is demonstrating that obesity levels and physical inactivity levels are rising in the UK.

To help turn this curve Pompey Study Centre have been working very closely with the players from Portsmouth Football Club, the members of Endurance Kayak 66 South and the crew of HMS Endurance to create a Health Education Resource Pack, which contains a variety of activities, games and challenges for children to participate in both at school and at home.

The Kick Start Health pack provides focused activities for Key Stage Two, related to healthy eating and exercise. It uses football (and HMS Endurance) as a motivational tool for learning.

All activities link into the National Curriculum, meeting specific objectives in Science, English, Mathematics, ICT, Design Technology and PSHE. The activities also link into some QCA units and address a key aspect of the Every Child Matters agenda related to healthy lifestyles.

The materials have been developed and produced by experienced educational personnel and each activity can be adapted and extended to suit children of varying abilities across the Key Stage. Additional support resources are included in the pack comprising of worksheets, fact sheets and Trump cards.

School age is the time that children start to enjoy busy social lives, have pocket money and begin to help choose their own lifestyle. Children of this age learn quickly and are also influenced by their friends and popular trends. This is the perfect time to learn about the importance of healthy food and activity. Sports have a major influence on many children in the UK and this resource has been designed to use that influence in a positive way.

As all schools strive for Healthy Schools status, it is important to remember that health plays a significant part in our children’s lives and the decisions they will make in the future.
