Global Warming Quick Facts
informationQUICK FACTS - Global Warming
  • Earth's climate is constantly changing. Although some changes last hundreds of thousands of years, and other last just a few years, Earth is the only planet that we know of with the right types of climate for living things.
  • Many scientists believe that human activities, like our increased use of burning coal, oil and gas, is increasing "greenhouse gases" in the atmosphere, making the Earth slowly warmer. However, scientists cannot agree on how much warmer the Earth might get.
  • When we talk about "Greenhouse gases"; we mean water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. In the right quantities, they are good for our planet as they work together to protect it from becoming too cold to live on. The trouble is, too much of these gases are being added to our atmosphere, and so our planet is warming up.
  • If the Earth continues to heat up, we may have to deal with problems such as extreme weather, melting land ice and shifting season patterns.
  • Not everyone agrees that climate change is a threat to our future. Some scientists argue that because the Earth's climate changes naturally, it never stays the same and so we have been experiencing changes to our weather patterns for centuries.
  • We can all make a difference to Earth's future and prevent global warming. A good way to start is by using less energy and learning to recycle.
