- St Helena island is situated in the South Atlantic Ocean 1950km from the south-west coast of Africa, and 2900km from the coast of South America.
- St Helena is the summit of a composite volcano, rising from the sea floor at a depth of 4,224m. The highest point on the Island is Diana's Peak at 818m.
- St Helena was originally uninhabited until the imprisonment of Napoleon Bonaparte at Longwood on the island, from 1815 until his death in 1821.
- Ascension Island is situated 1120 km to the north-west of St Helena.
- Today, Ascension Island and the Tristan da Cunha Island group are all dependencies of St Helena. The population of Ascension Island is approximately 1500, living in the capital Georgetown.
