QUICK FACTS - Water and Oceans |
 |
- Seawater covers almost 370 million square km on the Earth's surface. That is 370 with 19 zeros after it!
- The largest expanses of seawater have been divided into five enormous oceans. They are (in order of size): the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic oceans.
- The Pacific Ocean covers about one third of the Earth.
- Water is unique in that it is the only natural substance that is found in all three states - solid (ice), liquid and gas (steam). Water is also unusual because when it is in the solid form, ice is less dense than the liquid form. This is why ice floats.
- The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and the shallowest of the main oceans.
- Over 99% of all water on Earth is not available for our use, as it is in oceans, seas, ice and the atmosphere.
- How much does all the water in the sea weigh? 1.2 Quintillion tonnes. That is represented as 1,200,000,000,000,000,000 tonnes.
- What is the difference between a sea and an ocean? Seas are usually smaller than oceans and are partly enclosed by land. India for example, divides the Indian Ocean in two, creating the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Arabian Sea on the other.
