Oceans cover more than 2/3 of the Earth's surface. They are the largest and oldest living environments and more than 3,500 million years ago, life began here. But, although oceans dominate our Earth, we have only been exploring their hidden depths for about 100 years.
If you looked at the world's oceans from above, they appear unchanging and empty. But beneath the waves is a unique landscape of mountain ranges, volcanoes, huge plains and seemingly bottomless trenches. Thanks to advances in technology, it is possible for oceanographers to study these features, the animals that live in them and produce maps of the ocean floor.
