- At any one time in the world, there are about 20 volcanoes erupting.
- Volcanoes in the Andes are the highest in the world. Ojos del Salado is the highest active volcano at 6885m, while Aconcagua is the highest extinct volcano at 6960m.
- When Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, it completely covered the city of Pompeii in a blanket of ash, 18 metres deep.
- The country with the most volcanoes is Indonesia, which has about 200.
- The most destructive volcanic eruption in North America in recent times was Mount St Helens in Washington State in 1980. Ash spread over 800 km, avalanches were triggered, and 66 people were killed.
- Liquid lava is more than 8 times hotter than boiling water. It is thought to range in temperature from between 800°C and 1200°C
- The weather can be affected by volcanic eruptions. When Mount Panatabu erupted in 1999, it caused a temperature drop of 0.5°C (0.9°F) around the world.
- Kilauea, a volcano on Hawaii, is the world's biggest-ever active volcano. Since 1983, it has been spouting fire and red-hot lava.
