Tropical Rainforests Quick Facts
informationQUICK FACTS - Tropical Rainforests
Costa Rican Rain Forest
Costa Rican Rain Forest
  • Tropical rainforests cover less than 10% of the planet's land surface, but they contain between 50% and 70% of all plant and animal species.
  • Almost 50% of the world's rainforests have already been destroyed.
  • Rainforests play a vital role in regulating the world's climate as well as being the most important source of raw materials for new medicines
  • Over 1,600 of the rainforest's plants are edible and could be used as vegetables.
  • Unfortunately, the rainforests are still in danger. In the time it has taken for you to read this fact, an area the size of one square kilometre will have been cut down. It will take centuries for the forest to return, if ever.
