The People of Brazil |
South America was the last continent to be settled by early Man. After the Ice Age, the first people came from Asia. They moved into North America and the spread south until they reached South America. They were the ancestors of the Native Indians who still live in the remotest parts of Brazil.
The first settlers from Europe were the Portuguese. After 1500, they settled along the coast of Brazil and spread inland from the coast when gold and silver were discovered in the highlands. After that, many more settlers came from Portugal and they sent back sugar, gold, silver and timber to Europe.
Since the 19th Century, people from a number of European countries such as Italy and Germany have gone to Brazil to start a new life and today, Brazil has the largest number of Japanese people outside of Japan, representing 0.5% of the population.
There are still about 250,000 Indians living in the North, in small groups. They speak 180 different languages.
