  • People working in Antarctica need to consume as many as 5,000 calories per day to protect themselves from the cold. Scientists have spent a great deal of time formulating the right diet for working in Antarctica as Food = Energy = Body Warmth. Lack of Food = Possible death!
  • The first explorers and sailors often suffered from scurvy, a disease caused by a lack of vitamin C. The first signs of scurvy include arms and legs getting stiff and painful and teeth getting loose and falling out.
  • Early explorers to Antarctica relied heavily upon Pemmican, a mixture of dried beef and beef fat.
  • Because the very low temperatures in Antarctica can make dental fillings shrink and fall out, dental problems are quite common there.
  • Uses of food to the body in Antarctica
    • Energy Giving:-
      Provide body warmth.
      Help keep the body active.
    • Body Building:-
      Important to keep the body growing.
      Building up muscles.
    • Protection:-
      Essential for good health.
      Protection against Scurvy, Rickets, Soft Teeth.
