A Balanced Diet in Antarctica Factfile
A Balanced Diet in Antarctica

Introduction

One of the most important aspects of survival in Antarctica is having enough food to keep the body healthy and active in such an extreme environment. This is because humans get through much more food in a cold climate, burning it up and converting it to body heat rather than energy for physical activity.

Most of our understanding about what foods are necessary for a healthy diet in Antarctica has come from the mistakes made by those who were first to explore the polar regions. These early explorers often went out relatively under stocked with food and as a result suffered starvation and cold due to their lack of knowledge.

Here is our guide to having a balanced diet in Antarctica in case you ever set off to either of the Poles yourself.
