A lot has been written about Antarctica's future. As far back as the 1960's there was an opinion that by the 21st Century, rather like the future of the Moon, Antarctica might support cities underground or permanent settlements of one kind or another, thanks to developments in modern technology. However, because technology hasn't reached that point (just yet) and because the Antarctic Treaty is in place, Antarctica has remained free of all commercial development and only scientific research is allowed to be carried out there.
