Portugal Factfile
Portugal

Geography & Climate

Portugal is one of Europe’s smallest countries, covering an area of just 92,389 sq km and measuring 560 km north to south and 220 km east to west. Continental Portugal is split in two by its main river, the Rio Tejo, which flows northeast to southwest. North of the Tejo are mountains, while vast plains spread to the south with a climate somewhat drier and warmer than the cooler and rainier north.

The Algarve is the southwesternmost tip of Europe and enjoys a Mediterranean climate comparable with Morocco.

Madeira

The islands of Madeira and the Azores are located in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and more information about Madeira can be found by linking to our Madeira factfile.

Portugal is one of Europe’s warmest countries. In mainland Portugal, yearly temperature averages are about 15ºC in the north and 18ºC in the south. The Azores and Madeira have a narrower temperature range as expected given their insularity, with Madeira having low precipitation in most of the archipelago and the Azores being wet and rainy. Portugal’s climate can be classified as Mediterranean as Spring and Summer months are usually sunny and temperatures can be very high during July and August, averaging between 35ºC and 40ºC in the interior of the country, 30ºC - 35ºC in the north, and occasionally reaching 45ºC in the south. Autumn and Winter days are typically windy and rainy, with occasional sunny days.
