Christmas Letter from Anchor
Anchor the bear here,

From within the Arctic Circle. As I write to you all today, it is snowing outside my window and is very cold. We are at an island called South Georgia and it is very beautiful. Can you find where South Georgia is on a map? It is a very, very, very long way from my home in the UK.

There are huge mountains here that are covered in snow, as well as large numbers of some of my favourite animals. These animals include whales, dolphins, lots of different types of seals and my favourite of all – penguins!

Penguins are funny kinds of birds because they can’t fly. Instead they can swim very fast and every day lots of them swim next to HMS ENDURANCE so they can take a good look at us and say hello. Penguins don’t mind living here in the cold because they are protected by a thick layer of blubber and waterproof feathers. Do you know of any other animal that lives around the Arctic Circle that has blubber? Here’s a picture of one type – can you guess another?

Seal

Penguins are actually very clever birds because they have developed an amazing system for keeping warm. They cluster together in groups and every few minutes the cold penguins from the edge of the group swap places with the warmer bird in the centre. Emperor penguins like the cold weather so much; their babies are born in winter when the weather is at its worst. Can you imagine being born when it is really freezing, with blizzards and temperatures as low as -40ºC? How brave! It’s a good job that baby penguins have thick, fluffy feathers to keep them warm when they are born, otherwise they might not survive the bitter cold.

Did you know that some penguins can dive as deep as 260m underwater in search of fish? All the animals that I’ve mentioned eat fish, which is why they live in South Georgia because there are so many fish in the water here.

Rockhopper Penguin

Our last stop before we came here was the Falkland Islands. Those Islands are very different to South Georgia, as it’s very windy there. I liked the wind though as I got to go to the beach and fly my kite. I also went surfing with some people from the ship. That was all really good fun! We will be going back to the Falklands at the start of next year so I hope to do some more of the same.

We’re all looking forward to Christmas. I imagine you all are too? It won’t be long before we will start putting our decorations up. It will be strange being away from home but we have lots of things planned that will make it as nice as possible. I’ll tell you all about our Christmas in my next letter.

Before I go and help Captain Nick, Reckless and I have some Christmas jokes for you:

What games do cows like to play at Christmas parties?
Moo-sical chairs

What is a crocodile’s favourite Christmas party game?
Snap!

I hope you enjoy your Christmas and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours aye,

Anchor
