Manor Field Infant School - Anchors Home
Living, Learning and Growing Together

We are a school with 150 children and 30 staff on the edge of Basingstoke in Hampshire. Our link with HMS Endurance goes back to 1991 when a student on teaching practice asked her class to correspond with her boyfriend who was on the ship. The resulting exchange developed into a long-term relationship between Manor Field and HMS Endurance - we don't know whether the student and her boyfriend are still in touch!

The children benefit from the link in so many ways. The most memorable events for them are probably the visits from the crew, especially when arriving dramatically out of the sky in a Lynx helicopter! Throughout the year the photographs, postcards and messages coming from the ship enhance the children's understanding of the world, and increase their desire to learn more about it.

One of our strengths as a school is the warm, welcoming atmosphere that all visitors comment upon. The recent Ofsted inspection (November 2005) complimented us on our inclusive ethos and graded us "good" across the board. We were particularly pleased that they found that we met the needs of all our children, regardless of gender or ability.

With Anchor Bear as our ambassador and go-between on board, we track the progress of HMS Endurance as she makes her annual voyage to and from Antarctica. Who knows how many children will be inspired to travel, to take educated risks, to make positive changes in their lives, partly owing to an awareness of the vastness of the world and the possibilities that life holds? And maybe some of the adults too…
