Reckless the Bear here,
Writing to you again. I have received a number of your questions and Im going to do my best to answer them for you.
What animals have you seen?
So far we have seen a lot of different animals whilst we have been at sea, we have just left the tropical waters and are starting to see even more animals as creatures such as Whales like to live in colder waters. Every day we see flying fish jumping out of the water, we have also seen dolphins, sharks, many different types of birds including Albatross and Egrets, a turtle came close and when we arrived in Uruguay, we saw some Iguanas, which are massive lizards. I am really looking forward to seeing our first penguins and the really big whales you get down in the Antarctic.
Has there been any bad
weather?
We have only had bad weather on the first three days of our trip when we were near France, since then we have been in a very hot part of the world and the weather has been very good with flat seas, we think this will change though as it is very windy down in the Antarctic. (Have a look at our film of the storm under `A Stormy Life in the Ships Diary section).
How long are you staying down In Antarctica?
When we get down there we will be doing a lot of work making new charts (which is what we call a map when it shows the sea) of the area and studying the tides and all about this part of the world. This will take us some time but we are only down there for their summer, which is our winter because in their winter the weather is too cold and there are only a couple of hours of sunlight a day. We will be down in the Antarctic for a period of two and a half months before we start our long journey home.
Do you like working on HMS
ENDURANCE?
I love working on ENDURANCE because everyone here is so friendly and we get to go to very interesting parts of the world that I would not be able to see otherwise. Every day is different and we face new and exciting challenges all of the time.
What was it like meeting the
Queen?
When the Queen arrived onboard for her visit in Portsmouth there was a lot of excitement as all the ships in the Navy belong to her, that is why we are called HMS ENDURANCE because the HMS stands for Her Majestys Ship. We all got to meet her and she was very friendly, she had lots of questions about the ship and what we do and I think she loved it onboard as much as everyone else does.
Our next stop is the Falkland Islands and I will write to you all again when we are there. I will also answer more of your questions and if you have any more to send then please do so. Next time I might be able to tell you about more animals and other things I have seen.
Goodbye for now.
Yours aye,
Reckless.
