- Tristan da Cunha is the remotest inhabited island in the world. Its closest neighbour is St Helena - 2,334km away.
- The Portuguese navigator, Tristao da Cunha discovered the island in 1506 and while he did not land on it, he did name the island after himself.
- Tristan da Cunha is the tip of an ancient volcano, projecting from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
- There is only one inhabited area on Tristan da Cunha - a small village called Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. It is named after Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (second son of Queen Victoria) who visited the island in 1867.
- Rather like the Falklands and South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha is an important breeding ground for a number of albatross species, which are said to be at risk of extinction due to marine pollution and global habitat loss.
