The Falkland Islands are situated between 50o and 55º South of the equator, in the Southern Hemisphere. (London, England has a similar latitude position, but North of the Equator in the Northern Hemisphere). The climate of The Falkland Islands is similar to Britain, particularly Scotland. It is temperate with mild winters and cool summers.
Winter in the Falkland Islands is opposite to that of Britain, being in June, July and August. Temperatures are an average of 5ºC, but can fall below - 3ºC in July. The Summer months are what the British would regard as Winter, the warmest temperatures being found in January, 21ºC, with an average of about 10ºC. Summer months are cool because of the distance the Falkland Islands are from the Equator.

Rainfall occurs throughout the year. One major climate condition in the Islands is the wind. Force 6 and 7 winds (22–33 knots) blow for 20–25% of the year. However, winds of Force 8 and above (from 34 knots) are often experienced. In the winter months, 12% of all winds are this strong, this compares with 5-8% of winds for the rest of the year.
