Introduction
First port of call on HMS Endurances 2005/6 deployment is Madeira. Situated 600 km off the coast of north Africa, Madeira forms a triangle with Portugal and Morocco. Set in the eastern Atlantic, when the Portuguese explorers Zarco and Teixeira first spotted this island in 1418, Zarco described the island as "vapours rising from the mouth of hell". Such a dramatic backdrop to one of Europes most intriguing destinations.
