Introduction

Portsmouth is a densely populated city in the South of England built on an island called Portsea Island. The island is enclosed by two harbours - Langstone Harbour to the East and Portsmouth Harbour to the West.

Langstone Harbour is a haven for charter fishing boats and commercial fishermen as well as recreational activities such as sailing, wind-surfing, water skiing and canoeing.

Portsmouth Harbour is a commercial port. It is the home of the Royal Navy and a continental ferry port.

In the following pages we will look at aspects of both harbours including the dredging of marine aggregates in the Solent and the importance of nature reserves that exist in the harbours.
