Senegal Quick Facts
- Senegal is in the North Atlantic coast of West Africa.
- The country shares its borders with Mali, Mauritania, Guinea and Guineas Bissau. It covers the Republic of Gambia as an enclave on all the three sides within its boundaries.
- Senegal got its independence from France in 1960 and formed a federation with the Gambia called Senegambia in 1982. But the union was dissolved in 1989.
- The lowest point in Senegal is the Atlantic Ocean, at sea level. The highest point is an unnamed feature near Nepen Diakha in the Founta Djallon foothills at 581 m (1900 ft).
- Senegals climate is tropical; hot, humid; the rainy season (May to November) has strong southeast winds; the dry season (December to April) is dominated by hot, dry, harmattan wind.
- Senegal is the only country in West Africa to have positively achieved economic progress through well planned and executed macro-economic measures with the help of the IMF.
