Landscape & Climate

Tristan da Cunha has a land area of approximately 65 sq. km and it is volcanic in origin (approximately 1 million years old). Tristan da Cunha is a hot spot vocano, some 350 kms east of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and structurally part of the Walvis Ridge, receiving its magma from deep in the mantle compared with the shallower ocean floor spreading at the ridge.

The central peak of Tristan da Cunha rises to 2060m and generally the island has a very rugged landscape. The island is also roughly circular in shape with a coastline that is exposed around the whole of the island's circumference.

Tristan da Cunha

Summer on Tristan da Cunha falls between December - March and during the winter months, the central peak is covered in snow. The climate of Tristan is temperate, with constant trade winds. The island enjoys a wide temperature range (4 to 26ºC) and a high average rainfall of 1,676mm per year.
