Wildlife
The waters around Tristan da Cunha and the other islands support an amazing array of sealife. While Rockhopper penguins are established in various parts of the islands, elephant seals, fur seals, the Southern Right whale and the rare Shepherd's Beaked whale can also be found here.

Importantly, rather like the Falklands and South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha is a valuable breeding ground for many species of albatross, including the Wandering Albatross, the Yellow-nosed and SootyAlbatross, whose numbers are currently said to be at risk due to global problems such as marine pollution and habitat loss. Uniquely, 14 different types of Petrel can also be found nesting here, as well as the Flightless Rail.
In a bid to protect its unique environmental status, 40% of Tristan da Cunha's territory is under protection, with both Gough and Inaccessible islands classed as nature reserves.
