News - Nomination for the Herbert Lott Award Leading Chef P Brown, HMS ENDURANCE
Leading Chef Brown has been an outstanding asset to HMS ENDURANCE since joining on 10 June 2001. A very impressive and energetic individual, his day-to-day leadership and enthusiasm within the catering department sets him well apart from his peers. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Leading Chef Brown and he will go to great lengths to help anyone, regardless of the task or problem. Amongst 3 leading Chefs onboard ENDURANCE, he is natural deputy to the PO Caterer by virtue of his professional knowledge and drive to ‘achieve the aim’. AS a result, he routinely takes on more than his core role as a Leading Chef, making him an extremely valuable member no only to his own department but to the ship as a whole. Whatever the evolution, if Leading Chef Brown is placed in charge it will undoubtedly be completed effectively and with the minimum degree of fuss.

Leading Chef Brown has consistently made a strong contribution to the efficient running of the Catering Department and HMS ENDURANCE. However, he is specifically nominated to receive a Herbert Lott Award in recognition of the period in which he deputised in the absence of the PO Caterer, from 30 March – 24 May 2004. This period covered the last major Store Ship of a 6-month deployment (in Cape Town), where he independently dealt with the Ship’s Agent and chandler. This was a challenging time for a leading Chef to be in charge as the ship was running down its stores prior to entering a major refit. AS a result, menu planning was far more constrained than usual. Notwithstanding these difficulties, Leading Chef Brown’s elevation to departmental coordinator ensured that all catering department evolutions were meticulously planned and executed and he responded positively and effectively to unforeseen circumstances that required short notice change. Specifically, a barbeque for 120 people planned at 48 hours notice and a VIP Wardroom Lunch.

In summary, leading Chef Brown’s contribution to the proficient sustainability of HMS ENDURANCE has consistently been of a very high standard and as such merits recognition. For his committed performance, innovation and flexibility, particularly during the PO Caterer’s absence, Leading Chef Brown is very strongly recommended for a Herbert Lott Award.
