Antarctica is one of the worlds last great natural wildernesses. It is a continent almost entirely buried by snow and ice and is so hostile and remote that it has no permanent inhabitants. Apart from the handful of research stations, Antarctica remains virtually untouched by mans activities.
At the beginning of the 20th Century, explorers like Ernest Shackleton were drawn towards Antarctica with the aim of making geographical discoveries and perhaps territorial claims. Since that time, there have been many changes and developments to polar exploration.
To explain some of these changes, here is a fun comparison between Ernest Shackletons Endurance crew and their modern day counterparts on HMS Endurance. What may seem like a simple exercise, actually reveals how expeditions to Antarctica have developed and changed in less than 100 years.
