About the
Project |
Welcome to the 2003/2004 HMS Endurance Tracking Project.
HMS Endurance is a Royal Navy Ice Patrol Ship. She is deployed each year to Antarctica, leaving her base port of Portsmouth in the autumn, to return 7 months later in late spring.
Through the visitandlearn.co.uk website, we will track the passage of HMS Endurance and provide factfiles about various aspects of the journey - looking in particular at climates, ecosystems and wildlife at locations along the route, with additional material on the work of HMS Endurance and her close links with the British Antarctic Survey.

Aims of the project |
The aims of the project are to increase knowledge of the environment as a whole, provide further understanding about how scientific natural history evolves and promote the related work of museums, the Royal Navy and the British Antarctic Survey Team through educational resources.
The project contains information such as the current track of the Endurance's journey (which includes maps); information about the locations visited on route; a diary from the Ship and weather reports. There are also factfiles about Ernest Shackleton's voyage to Antarctica and information on what happened to his crew after they were rescued from Antarctica; as well as information on such subjects as the British Antarctic Survey, longitude and latitude, ecosystems, and food in Antarctica. The site also includes an interactive zone that contains quizes and a section with links to further information.

Metlink |
For their 03/4 deployment, HMS Endurance are proud to be associated with the flagship weather project of The Royal Meteorological Society.
www.MetLink.org is the global weather observation project of the Royal Meteorological Society. During 2004, participants around the world will be encouraged to make and exchange weather observations once a day by means of an on-line database and, with the help of meteorological professionals, analyse and interpret the observations.
The project is for primary and secondary schools (age range 7-19) and for individuals of any age. It supports Geography, Science and/or ICT and will run from 26th January to 6th February and 15th March to 19th March (the latter is National Science Week in the UK).
However simple your weather instruments, you can take part in this project. For further information, click here.
