About the
Project |
Welcome to the 2005 HMS Endurance Tracking Project.
HMS Endurance is a Royal Navy Ice Patrol Ship. She is deployed each year to Antarctica, leaving her base port of Portsmouth in the autumn, to return 7 months later in late spring.
Through the visitandlearn.co.uk website, we will track the passage of HMS Endurance and provide factfiles about various aspects of the journey - looking in particular at climates, ecosystems and wildlife at locations along the route, with additional material on the work of HMS Endurance and her close links with the British Antarctic Survey.

Metlink |
For their 05 deployment, HMS Endurance are proud to be associated with the flagship weather project of The Royal Meteorological Society.
www.MetLink.org is the global weather observation project of the Royal Meteorological Society. During 2005, participants around the world will be encouraged to make and exchange weather observations once a day by means of an on-line database and, with the help of meteorological professionals, analyse and interpret the observations.
The project is for primary and secondary schools (age range 7-19) and for individuals of any age. It supports Geography, Science and/or ICT and will run from 31st January 4th February 2005 and 28th February 11th March 2005.
However simple your weather instruments, you can take part in this project. For further information, click here.

Reckless the Bear |
Proud to be joining the crew of HMS Endurance on their 2005 deployment, is Reckless the Bear the mascot of Crofton Hammond Junior School in Hampshire.
Crofton Hammond Junior School is a two-class entry Junior school attended by 244 boys and girls aged 7 to 11. The school lies near the centre of the large residential village of Stubbington situated in southern Hampshire close to the sea. The area has strong links with the Royal Navy and several Naval establishments are close by.
The school was opened in 1974 as a semi open-plan building and although teaching styles have changed since that time and the classrooms have become more enclosed the school has preserved an open and exciting approach to its curriculum. There are extensive school grounds with a large field and a conservation area.
Academically very successful, the school is also very proud of its high level of sporting and musical achievement.

RECKLESS THE BEAR
Reckless the Bear has been a fundamental part of school life for the past five years. There is a regular display of his travels which forms part the school's geography curriculum. He is taken on holiday by members of the school community, children and adults, and records his travels through photographs and reminiscences on his return. He is a particularly popular travelling companion for parents going on business trips! His range of travels is wide and reflects the amazing places children visit for their holidays, he has just returned from a trip to Thailand with a Year 3 child. Over the past few years he has visited Australia, Africa, China, America, Russia and every country in Europe.
Reckless the Bear is obviously very excited about the prospect of visiting Antarctica the ultimate challenge for any one not just an intrepid bear!

The children from Crofton Hammond school saying goodbye to Reckless the bear
During HMS Endurances 2005 deployment, not only will you be able to see how Reckless the Bear copes the severe climate of Antarctica, as part of the schools Science Curriculum, the crew of HMS Endurance will be carrying out an experiment on behalf of the children.
The children of Crofton Hammond school would like to know if runner beans will grow around support poles in the southern hemisphere in the opposite direction to runner bean plants grown in the school, which is firmly located in the northern hemisphere. Follow the experiment online once HMS Endurance has passed the Equator on her deployment -what do you think the outcome will be?
