Crofton Hammond Junior School is a two-class entry Junior School attended by boys and girls aged 7 to 11. The school lies near the centre of the large residential village of Stubbington situated in Southern Hampshire close to the sea. The area has strong links with the Royal Navy and several Navy establishments are close by.

Speaking about the award, Mrs Ann Jennings, Headmistress of the school said, “We are delighted to receive this award in recognition of the quality of teaching and learning in Geography in our school. One of the many ways in which we have tried to make our lessons more interesting is through our link with HMS ENDURANCE. Our school bear, Reckless joined the ship for two voyages and the children were able to track his journey to and from the South Atlantic via e-mail”.

“We received regular updates from Reckless via the crew about ports of call and we regularly tracked HMS ENDURANCE’S deployment through their website. Some of our children took part in the Metlink Project through our involvement with HMS ENDURANCE and the school became a weather station sending off regular weather data which we could compare with data from other areas”.

“Through class visits from the Ship’s Company children were also able to find out about aspects of human geography - they learned about life in the Antarctic and equipment needed to survive in Antarctic conditions. We are very grateful to HMS ENDURANCE for helping to bring our geography lessons to life”.

A spokesperson for HMS ENDURANCE commented “Congratulations to Crofton Hammond School on their recent Geography Award. This must have involved a lot of hard work by both teachers and pupils. We are pleased that, via our web-site, we were able to contribute to the school’s lessons and perhaps make their work more interesting and relevant. We certainly enjoyed having Reckless on board. "

“Antarctica is a fascinating wilderness and the Ship’s Company of HMS Endurance are aware of how privileged we are to be able to visit it. By increasing awareness of Antarctica’s ecology and the impact of human activities upon it, we hope that Crofton Hammond will contribute to the protection of this amazing habitat”.
