Crofton
Hammond Junior School is affiliated to HMS Endurance and when the school heard that during HMS Endurances 2006/7 deployment, four members of the Ships Company with 3 other Royal Navy personnel and one civilian instructor were participating in ENDURANCE KAYAK 66 SOUTH, a unique expedition to circumnavigate James Ross Island for the first time in sea kayaks for charity, the school decided they wanted to do something to support one of the expeditions chosen charities.
The Hampshire Autistic Societys mission is to give choice, opportunity, professional advice, education, support and care to all those affected by autism and the 250 pupils from Crofton Hammond got themselves sponsored by their families and friends to eat each of their 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, for a week and raised £1,137 for this worthwhile charity.
Gemma Harvey and Sally Stemp from the society collected the cheque from the pupils at a recent school assembly and also gave a talk to help the pupils understand more about autism and how the childrens money will be spent by the charity. Also present was PO Steve Paris-Hunter, one of the team members of ENDURANCE KAYAK 66 SOUTH.
Head
teacher Ann Jennings said` I introduced Steve Paris-Hunter as the person the children remembered from HMS Endurance who had previously come into school to tell us about the kayaking event. He had also kindly accompanied a group of children to the Geographical Society Lecture at Christmas. I then went on to introduce Gemma and Sally from the Hampshire Autistic Society and asked the children why they thought they were here. They quickly told me it was because they had raised so much money through the sponsored event we had done at the same time as ENDURANCE KAYAK 66 SOUTH and in support of one of the expeditions charities. '
`The
children are really proud of how much money theyve raised for the Hampshire Autistic Society as our final total was over £1,000. For the benefit of our visitors, the children then explained how we had raised it - that they had been sponsored for every portion of fruit and vegetables they ate for a week. We even talked about how I'd had my food diary up on the wall in the hall and how my Dad had sponsored me! '

`The
children were then very keen to ask Steve about the kayaking, how it had gone, whether he had used the equipment he had showed them on his previous visit, whether the tents worked, was it as windy as he thought it would be, was he cold, what animals did he see -and did anyone fall in! The children also wanted to know how much money the ENDURANCE KAYAK team had raised. '
`Sally then explained how some of the members of ENDURANCE KAYAK had previously visited the children she worked with, how the Hampshire Autistic Society are linked with HMS Endurance and how her children enjoyed their visits. It was a lovely assembly for the children as they learned a lot about autism and the schools link with HMS Endurance.
