About HMS Endurance
The Work

HMS Endurance is the Royal Navy's Ice Patrol Ship. Her function is to support British interests in Antarctic waters, especially around the Antarctic Peninsula.

HMS Endurance is primarily a hydrographic surveying ship and is capable of hydrographic survey in both the deep water oceans and the inshore waters of Antarctica. She is fitted with modern hydrographic surveying equipment which is put to good effort in waters which are still largely uncharted and the data which is gathered is processed by the hydrographic office in Taunton and drawn into charts which are used by mariners around the world.

To assist with the inshore surveys she carries 2 survey motor boats, which operate independently from eachother and from the ship. The ship also carries 2 Lynx helicopters which can be used for a variety of purposes including re-supplying boat camps and transporting survey teams. In addition to the hydrographic work HMS Endurance assists the British Antarctic Survey in carrying out its scientific research programmes.
