1956 57
As part of the 1957 IGY (International Geophysical Year), the Americans built a science station at the South Pole. They named it Amundsen-Scott base.
1958
The Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, led by Vivian Fuchs and Sir Edmund Hilary, was the first overland trans-continental expedition. The two men, after many difficulties, managed to cross from opposing sides of the continent and met at the Pole on 19th January 1958.
1967
The first HMS Endurance, pennant number A171, served as the Antarctic ice patrol vessel from 1967 to 1991.
1969
12th November, first women reach the South Pole.

Fiennes, Burton and Shepard cross continent with snow-mobiles as part of Transglobe Expedition
