Introduction
In 1818 an extraordinary encounter took place between a group of Eskimos and two British naval officers on the western shore of Greenland. The British officers, Commander John Ross and Lieutenant William Parry, had only ever met one Eskimo before, the Eskimos had never before seen a white man; indeed they asked, Where do you come from, the sun or the moon?
This encounter was the beginning of an enthralling chapter in naval history, the beginning of a long quest, first for the North-west Passage, later for the North Pole and then for the South Pole.
Map of Antarctic Peninsula
So unique is the illustrious history of Royal Navy achievements in polar exploration, that a look at any map of the Antarctic or Arctic will reveal a peppering of islands, waterways and mountains named after fearless naval adventurers and their ships.
But the spirit of adventure that motivated these early naval adventurers to take on some of the most extreme challenges to humankind has been the inspiration behind Polar Quest, the historical expedition to the High Arctic and Antarctica in 2006-07.
Polar Quest
Here we tell the incredible story of Polar Quest, how the remarkable expedition has followed in the footsteps of legendary adventurer Scott of the Antarctic and written a new page in naval polar exploration.
