Around the world with Ellen MacArthur

For the last 2 deployments HMS ENDURANCE has set their selves with a deployment challenge. The first was using all the Cardio Vascular Training equipment on board (Treadmills, Rowing Machines, Steppers and Exercise Bikes); the whole Ship’s company combined had to cover the distance between Portsmouth and the South Pole, 6948 miles. The second was the same type of challenge; however the distance was increased to the amount of miles between the North and South Pole 12273 miles.

With the success of completing both challenges HMS ENDURANCE is stretching themselves to the limit by trying to complete the same amount of Miles as Dame Ellen MacArthur completed on her voyage around the world, which works out at 27354 amount of miles. This means each day the ship has to complete 111 miles.

The Ship’s Company all have access to the gym at all times, and on completion of their workout they simply add the amount of mileage they have done into the gym user log and this gets calculated up every 2 weeks. LSTD Brewer is in charge of keeping track of all the mileage and publishing the figures for all to see. The information provided will tell us who has done the most mileage on each bit of equipment, the overall amount of miles done on each bit of equipment and the overall mileage completed using all bits of equipment.

The person who completes the most amount of mileage during the deployment will win the “Pole to Pole” Challenge Cup, which was presented to the ship after last years “Pole to Pole” Challenge by Kongsberg Maritime, who also kindly provided us with £3000 to help with our welfare and charitable giving.
