PORTSMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB PARTNERS HMS ENDURANCE IN HEALTHY INITIATIVE FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS

The Royal Navy’s Ice Patrol Vessel, HMS ENDURANCE, is pleased to announce an exciting new working partnership with Portsmouth Football Club to promote healthy lifestyle choices to children within the Portsmouth area.

The elite footballers of Portsmouth Football Club have joined forces with HMS ENDURANCE to educate children about sports fitness and inspire them to lead fit and healthy lives.

On Wednesday 20th September 2006, players from Portsmouth Football Club went onboard HMS ENDURANCE to present HMS ENDURANCE’S football team with an official Portsmouth FC home strip, to kick-off what will be a very exciting and unique partnership.

This ambitious project is further supported by Portsmouth City Council who has provided funds for a schools pack, which is to be produced by teaching staff at The Pompey Study Centre. This will be released later on in the year to every school in Portsmouth to promote sports fitness and healthy living through two very different sporting disciplines, football and kayaking. Kayaking will form part of the pack as some of the crew of HMS ENDURANCE are taking on the extreme challenge of kayaking in Antarctica’s cold and ice.

ENDURANCE KAYAK 66 SOUTH is a unique expedition in the Antarctic to circumnavigate James Ross Island for the first time in Sea Kayaks. Seven members of HMS ENDURANCE’S crew will face Antarctica’s extreme and harsh environment to raise money for charity, raise the profile of kayaking to everyone and educate people about sports fitness with the support of Portsmouth Football Club.

The school packs will support new government policy for schools called `Every Child Matters' Every Child Matters: Change for Children is a new approach to the well-being of children and young people from birth to age 19.

The Government's aim is for every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, to have the support they need to:
  • Be healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve
  • Make a positive contribution
  • Achieve economic well-being
This means that the organisations involved with providing services to children will be teaming up in new ways, sharing information and working together, to help children achieve what they want in life. Over the next few years, every local authority will be working with its partners, to find out what works best for children and young people in its area and act on it. Lt Richard Abbot who is one of the kayakers involved in ENDURANCE KAYAK 66 SOUTH, commented, “This is a perfect partnership for ENDURANCE KAYAK 66 SOUTH and HMS ENDURANCE as we can combine our knowledge of fitness with that of Portsmouth Football Club to help and support children in the local area and try to make a real difference. As we have created a unique partnership that will hopefully appeal to even children who traditionally don’t engage in education, I hope everyone in the local community will see the value of what we are trying to do in schools and support us”.

FACTS ABOUT CHILDHOOD OBESITY
  • Childhood obesity in England has doubled in 10 years
  • One in four children is obese and one in three teenagers is overweight or obese
  • Recent studies have found that television viewing and playing video games for longer periods of time, or not participating in sports outside of school was associated with increased levels of obesity, whilst physical activity shows a proactive effect.
