HMS Endurance Match Action

While Pompey are enjoying their best ever season in the Premier League known to generations of supporters, we bring you an exclusive match report from Endurance’s very own Harry Redknapp, `Scouse’ Weedon. As Endurance’s 2006/7 deployment unfolds, Scouse will bring you first-hand reports of the Ship’s football team in action from around the globe.

HMS ENDURANCE recently visited the island of Madeira, and was at sea for a week before we got there so the lads who play in the football team were eager to get a run out against a local team. When told that we were due to play against the local Army, we were more than up for the challenge!

You could imagine the disappointment when we were told that they had backed out the day before we were due to play them, because it was a Sunday and they didn’t fancy playing on a weekend. But not to be deterred and with the pitch (I use the term loosely) already booked me and Clubz decided to gather the lads, and see how many we could get to play between ourselves.

As expected the response was overwhelming and we managed to field two eleven a-side teams to play. One playing in the new Portsmouth kit which was donated kindly by Portsmouth Football Club and used for the first time, with the other team wearing the old England strip, a strange sight in a foreign country.

So to the game. The teams were picked evenly which showed in the result, 5 all, with some great goals with OM `Taff’ Hughes scoring a top hat trick, MNE `Nige’ Hawkes and an own goal completing the 5 for the team wearing blue.

For the whites a double for OM `Scouse’ Weedon and MNE `Jelly-man’ Leevers and finally a tap in for OM `Veg’ Carman.

The defence was also solid from both teams with LPT `Les’ Dennis running things for the Pompey blues and MEM `Tanzy’ Lee for the whites of England.

Overall it was a great run out and a good way to test some of the new lads and all looks well for our game against the local Argentine Navy next week.
