Appointments in HMS Valiant and HMS Olympus were followed by a posting to teach junior officers at the submarine school from which he joined HMS Torbay as watch leader. On completion of the submarine command course, he served as the Executive Officer in HMS Tireless and in 1994 joined the staff of Commander Submarine Force US Atlantic Fleet, as the Anti-Submarine Operations Officer, on exchange in Norfolk, Virginia.
Bob was appointed to command HMS Talent in early 1997, leaving in 1999 to join Flag Officer Submarines Staff as the programmes and plans officer. He moved to Whitehall in 2001 serving in Policy Planning and, following promotion to Captain in 2003, as the deputy director of Force Development working to develop the future strategic policy requirements, planning assumptions and capability priorities for the Armed Forces.
Beyond his joint and maritime operational background, he has considerable recent experience of strategic planning, resourcing and the management of change in large organisations at a higher management level. On behalf of the UK MOD, he has assisted a number of countries and international organisations at national and departmental level to review, improve and adjust their defence and security policies, posture and capabilities to prepare for the increasingly complex strategic challenges of the future.
Bob assumed command of HMS Endurance in February 2007. He is married with two children and lives in Hampshire.
