Rachel Hazell: Pages From The Travelling Bookbinder

Rachel Hazell is a bookartist. She designs, writes, illustrates, prints, binds and exhibits book-related work using age-old labour-intensive methods.

Rachel strives to produce the ultimate artist's book; one that combines form and function in the most simple way.

On the Education and Outreach committee for International Polar Year, Rachel is now hitching a lift on HMS Endurance to the Antarctic Peninsula to research further art works inspired by the paper like qualities of ice.

Examples of Rachel’s work `Ice Cliff’ and `Ripped Edge’

Rachel’s seemingly unquenchable addiction for Antarctica started as far back as December 2004 when she was Artist-in-Residence on Quark’s semi-circumnavigation of Antarctica and the ripped edges of ice cliffs and striated lines sea-etched on ice- bergs inspired paper art works for her exhibition ‘Ice Bound: Antarctic Bookworks’ in Amsterdam, in April 2005.

As on board Artist-in-Residence for the month of November, Rachel will be documenting her personal experiences and trying to bind paper icebergs and 'read' the lines of shadows on crevasse fields while exploring various themes such as mapping, journals and language.

Rachel will be documenting her time on HMS Endurance through notes, sketches, photographs and scraps of poetry. This will form the basis of further research for her festival show at the Scottish Poetry Library (July – September 2007) and also crucial reconnaissance for the more ambitious future Antarctic Land Art project.

Rachel would welcome interaction with schools or colleges and can be contacted by using the enquiry form here as she is committed to ‘spreading the word’, literally and visually, about the significance and wonder of Antarctica.

Apart from making books, Rachel also sings, travels, practices yoga, takes photographs and looks out for the worldwide possibilities of workshops, residencies and the chance to prove that everybody has a book inside them.

Hazell Designs Books has a motto; READ MAKE LOVE BOOKS
